Great, great information about sleep and sleep issues

Today, I was random googling about epilepsy, because it’s new in our lives and there’s so much to learn.

Billy’s epilepsy first showed itself behaviourally – intense onset OCD, high anxiety, followed within days by atypical tonic-clonic events in light sleep. By the time we had an EEG (a long one, I don’t even count a short EEG as even remotely useful, except maybe to get your child used to having the electrodes stuck to their head) he was showing constant intense sub-clinical discharges in his right frontal lobe. These intensified when he was falling asleep and waking up. They progressed to generalised tonic-clonic seizures in the same sleep phases. He takes Epilim (Depakote if you are in the USA, sodium valproate if you are a chemist) which gets mixed reviews from us (more about that another day).

So, even though we have been blessed with a sleeper, his sleep is now invaded by epilepsy. Hence my google ‘autism, epilepsy, sleep’, and the emergence of this excellent article.

PS. I subscribe to Autism File, and have the ultimate respect for Polly Tommey and her team. If you are unfamiliar with The Autism File story… read this – http://www.autismfile.com/sample-page, and then click around the site.

It’s pretty inspiring.
